The Green Belt is there for a Reason

Purpose of Green Belt

Stop urban sprawl: To prevent cities from expanding into the surrounding countryside.

Prevent merging: To stop neighbouring towns from becoming one continuous built-up area.

Protect the countryside: To safeguard landscapes, woodlands, wildlife corridors, and farmland from encroachment.

Preserve historic towns: To maintain the setting and special character of historic towns.

Encourage urban regeneration: To promote development within existing built-up areas, including recycling derelict land.

National and local policy give substantial weight to preserving its openness.

No exceptional justification: Developers must prove "very special circumstances" to remove land from Green Belt.Housing need alone is not enough.

Both sites along Saunders Lane are in the protected Green Belt. NOT in so called "grey belt" as argued by the developer - Martin Grant Homes.

"Grey belt" land is a new planning term for land within England's Green Belt that is of low quality and poorly contributes to the Green Belt's purposes, such as disused car parks, old petrol stations, or land on the edge of settlements.

Look at the the image above, the Land North of Saunders Lane is clearly not of low quality - it is open countryside.

Woking already has enough housing supply: Woking Borough Council has confirmed a 5+ year housing supply, so there is no urgent need to release Green Belt land

Unsustainable location: No shops, schools, GP surgeries, or reliable public transport nearby. Residents would be car-dependent.
